Video watermark export specifications

The editor uses Remotion’s client-side renderer to decode the selected source, render the watermark composition frame by frame, encode it with browser media capabilities, and package the result locally. Source media is not sent to an Apply Watermark conversion server.

Create a watermark that works throughout the clip

A video changes from frame to frame, so the editor keeps the controls familiar and the preview playable. Review more than the opening frame before choosing the final placement.

  • Add readable text

Type a copyright line, brand name, website, social handle, draft label, or creator credit. Choose a color that works against the picture, then use a soft shadow or contrast outline when scenes move between bright and dark backgrounds. Short wording is usually easier to read on a phone.

  • Place a transparent logo

Choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP logo when a visual identity is more useful than text. A transparent PNG usually gives the cleanest result because the artwork can sit over the moving picture without a solid rectangle. The editor preserves the logo proportions while size changes.

  • Choose precise placement

Use one of nine quick positions or drag the watermark directly over the video. Relative placement keeps it in the same part of every exported frame. Leave safe space around captions, faces, product details, and controls that a social platform may place over the clip.

  • Balance size and opacity

A small corner mark can support attribution without distracting from finished work. A larger translucent label is often more suitable for client proofs or unreleased footage. Play through contrasting scenes and check that the selected strength stays legible without hiding the subject.

  • Rotate or tile the mark

Rotation can follow the composition or create a recognizable proof style. Tiling repeats the mark across the picture when a single corner label could be cropped away. Reduce opacity when repeating a watermark so the video remains useful for review.

  • Review important moments

Play, pause, mute, and seek through the local preview before export. A position that looks clear at the beginning can cover a face, subtitle, title, or product later. One careful timeline review is usually quicker than encoding the complete video a second time.

Four-step browser workflow

How to add watermark to video locally

The complete media workflow runs inside the current tab. There is no account, cloud project, upload queue, or remote encoder between the source and the download.

  1. Choose a playable clip

Select one video from your device. The page reads its dimensions, duration, frame rate, and codec locally. MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, and MPEG-TS containers are recognized when their video codec can be decoded by the current browser and device. Remotion then uses the same source in the timeline preview and final composition.

  2. Design the watermark

Enter text or choose a logo, then set its size, opacity, rotation, and position. The preview updates immediately without rendering the entire file. When you add watermark to video, sample several timeline positions because changing backgrounds make contrast and safe placement especially important.

  3. Choose practical quality

Select a standard, high, or very high video bitrate. Higher values may retain more picture detail, but they create a larger download and require more work from the device. Remotion uses the browser H.264 encoder and packages the finished composition as an MP4 file.

  4. Encode and download a copy

Start export and keep the tab open. Remotion decodes the source, renders the shared video-and-watermark composition frame by frame, and packages the encoded tracks into MP4. Progress follows completed frames, cancellation remains available, and the finished result downloads to your usual folder without real-time playback.

Privacy and compatibility

What browser-only video processing means

Local processing brings useful privacy benefits and real technical limits. The page explains both so you can decide whether the browser and device are suitable for a particular clip.

  • The source remains on your device

Apply Watermark creates a temporary local reference so the browser can preview the chosen file. It does not send the clip to an Apply Watermark server or save it in an online account. Clearing the workspace or closing the page releases that temporary reference.

  • Export runs independently of playback

The preview stays paused while the renderer processes frames as quickly as the device allows. A short clip may finish faster than its playback duration, while high resolution, a demanding codec, or limited hardware can take longer. Keep the tab open and prevent the device from sleeping until the MP4 download begins.

  • The browser decides final support

Media features and codecs still differ by browser and device. The editor checks file decoding and Remotion’s H.264 and AAC browser support before exporting MP4. A compatible source audio track is included by the composition without relying on real-time playback; otherwise the export panel identifies a silent result.

Useful answers

Questions people ask before they begin

These short answers cover the practical details that matter most before you use the page.

Does the page upload my video?

No. Preview, frame decoding, watermark drawing, encoding, and MP4 packaging happen in the browser. There is no video upload endpoint, conversion API, cloud library, or account connected to the editor.

Which input videos work?

The editor recognizes common MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, and MPEG-TS containers. Remotion reads the selected source for both preview and export, while actual container and codec support still varies by browser and device. The editor reports the unsupported codec instead of leaving a permanently black preview.

Will the download be an MP4 file?

Yes. Remotion’s browser renderer encodes H.264 and packages the result as MP4. If the current browser or device cannot provide the required decoder or encoder, the editor reports that limitation instead of silently changing the download to WebM.

Why can export take several minutes?

Every video frame must be decoded, rendered with the watermark, and encoded again. Remotion is not tied to playback speed, so it works as fast as available hardware permits. Resolution, duration, source codec, output bitrate, thermal limits, and other open tabs can all affect the completion time.
